Replace Hazelwood with Clean Energy

In late 2016, it was announced that Hazelwood, Australia's dirtiest power station, would close in March 2017.

This was great news for our climate, but yet another example of governments leaving decisions about our energy up to multinational coal companies, rather than planning for an orderly phase-out of coal power and proper transition to new industries.

Join us as we call on State, Territory and Federal governments to work together on a plan for the retirement of all coal-fired power station and a just transition for the workers and their communities.

Why is this important?

Hazelwood power station polluted Victoria for over 54 years. After a ten year campaign, led by hundreds of Greens volunteers, Environment Victoria, Friends of the Earth, Latrobe Valley locals, and community groups across the state working together, it was announced in September 2016 that Hazelwood would close for good.

Hazelwood’s closure shows that globally, coal is on the way out. But disappointingly, State and Federal Governments haven’t shown leadership by planning an orderly phase-out of coal. Instead, they’ve left decisions to multinational coal companies, and have not put in place new industries for the Latrobe Valley ahead of time.

While we’re very pleased the Victorian Labor Government has offered up some money for the Latrobe Valley community, it should have put in place new industries long before Hazelwood closed.

Join our Beyond Coal campaign as we call on State, Territory and Federal governments to plan for the retirement of all coal-fired power stations and a just transition for workers and their communities.
